Inside Newmedica’s new flagship hospital

Newmedica Bristol Aztec West is the organisation’s fourth facility in the city

Newmedica has opened its newest hospital, Bristol Aztec West, immediately to the north of the city centre.

The facility, the organisation’s fourth in Bristol and largest so far, aims to support the local community in their eye health needs and has been unofficially named as Newmedica’s new flagship.

It takes referrals for pre and post-operative cataracts, glaucoma follow-up and YAG and SLY laser, amongst other treatments.

Will Sheehan, clinical director at the hospital, called it “the next chapter of Newmedica Bristol, in our quest to be able to support the local community.”

It allows two clinics to operate at the same time, as well as offering a laser clinic, and “covers 90% of ophthalmology management and treatment,” he said.

The hospital operates seven days a week and is easy for patients to access, with a large car park. It is located in Patchway, a 20-minute drive north of Bristol city centre.

Julian Philips, operational director, said: “We are here to provide an ophthalmology service for the community throughout Bristol and the south west. We provide an ophthalmology service which is both set up for treatment in an efficient way, but also in a caring way.”

Sheehan emphasised how important local relationships are for the future of the facility.

“We’re really keen to foster close relationships with all our local optometrists,” he said. “We recognise that we’re two sides of the same coin.”

Part of engaging with local optometrists involves running regular CPD events, covering topics such as glaucoma and cataracts, he said.

Kelly Cavallo, regional service manager, gave OT a tour, starting with the spacious waiting room and walking through the facility’s diagnostic, testing and consulting rooms, and theatre suite.
