Optometry Scotland is calling on practices across the nation to participate in a workforce survey that is designed to explore the current landscape of the optometry and dispensing optics workforce in Scotland.

The findings of the survey will be used to inform Optometry Scotland and advise its discussions with the Scottish Government, helping it to advocate for policies and initiatives that support the sector.

Optometrist and vice chair of Optometry Scotland, Eilidh Thomson, explained that the survey is a “crucial piece of research which will allow us to get a real sense of what the workforce needs in the coming years.”

Thomson urges every practice to complete the survey “to help us build an accurate picture of the community optometry landscape in Scotland.”

She added: “We want to be proactive and demonstrate to government officials that we understand our workforce needs to prepare for the future. Ultimately, these resources will help us to continue to provide the world-class eye care Scotland is renowned for, at a universal level.”

Optometry Scotland highlighted the importance of understanding the workforce across the nation, referencing the 2023 signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by the Scottish Government, NHS Education for Scotland, Glasgow Caledonian University, and the University of the Highlands and Islands, and changes to the degree qualification that will come into effect.

It explained that “concerns remain over a fluctuation in supported student numbers.”

The survey is estimated to take 15 minutes to complete and closes on 24 July. If you are a practice owner or manager, you can take part in the survey by visiting Optometry Scotland’s website.
