Almost half of all final year optometry students have completed a new contact lens course which is currently being hosted across the UK by Johnson & Johnson Vision Care (J&J).

The contact lens company’s new Success Through Education Programme (STEP) has enrolled around 300 undergraduates, with students from Anglia, Aston, Bradford, Cardiff, City, Glasgow, Manchester and Plymouth universities all attending the course.

Launched earlier this year, STEP is designed to support “the next generation of practitioners as they transform from undergraduates to newly-qualified optometrists and beyond,” J&J explained.

The contact lens company has also visited 75% of all optometry students in their penultimate year of study on campus.

Manager of the Vision Care Institute, Sheetal Patel, said: “We are fortunate to have the backing of so many university optometry departments as it means we are able to support their students as they progress through their career.”

She added: “Already, almost 500 penultimate year students are interested and excited about being part of STEP next year, accounting for more than three quarters of next year’s final-year optometry graduates. That bodes well for the long-term success of the programme and the vision care industry as a whole.”

J&J has confirmed that it will launch a number of new educational initiatives as part of the programme over the next 12 months.
