Session 5: Eye emergencies - through the eyes of the locum optometrist

Optometry practice is increasingly becoming the first port of call for acute ocular conditions when they occur. Urgent and emergency eye conditions can be one of the most interesting but also most challenging aspects of our professional role.

We are often involved in triaging cases, examining them and then either managing them or referring them. For locum optometrists, this challenge might be increased by limitations in being able to follow the patient up personally or fewer opportunities to gain feedback from the hospital setting when the patient has been referred.

This session on acute and emergency conditions will offer an overview of the most common urgent situations, from red eyes, sudden visual changes and some injuries. The session will focus on the essential clinical elements that we aim to get right, particularly when examining the patient as a locum optometrist.

Learning outcomes

  • Practitioners will be able to identify key symptoms in common ocular emergencies
  • Practitioners will be able to assess and manage common ocular emergencies relative to their scope of practice.
