A scheme delivered by Specsavers that supports the professional development of optical assistants to become clinical technicians has celebrated its 500th graduate.
Specsavers explained that the training programme, which was established in June 2022, gives trainees the skills required to perform diagnostic information gathering and pre-assessment procedures when working under the supervision of an optometrist.
Staff member Isabel Nibbs recently became the 500th graduate from the scheme after
completing the 16-week training programme.
Nibbs, who works at Specsavers in Crowborough and is now a clinical technician, shared: “The clinician technician training has enabled me to become more confident with patients and have a deeper understanding of how to complete pre-screening efficiently.”
Recognising the milestone and congratulating Nibbs, co-founder of Specsavers, Doug Perkins, said “the clinical technician role is such an important role now and for the future.”
Specsavers Crowborough optometry director, Dimple Mehta, reflected on the benefits that the role brings the business and patients, highlighting that several colleagues have completed the training at the practice.
“It has given us someone who is skilled and confident in communications with patients and we have had some great customer feedback. It has also been reflected in a smoother customer journey, which has allowed our clinics to run more efficiently,” he said.

Could someone from Specsavers (AOP) please let us know how much extra per hour the clinical technician gets paid after completing the training. The silence is painful

Should we rename the âAOPâ as âSpecsavers AOPâ? The present âAOPâ only seems to source content from mainly one company; itâs as if the rest of us either donât exist or have nothing interesting to say. Or maybe itâs a slow news day and the âAOPâ is filling the space with ânewsâ which is of no interest to anyone else?
