Eyewear and eye care are just as important for prisoners as for everyone else. Optical services in prisons are provided by optometrists and dispensing opticians through contracts with the NHS

The charity the Prison Optician Trust was set up by two optometrists, not only to provide these services, but also to provide training to prisoners in making spectacles and other aspects of customer service in optics. Some have gone on to become dispensing opticians. Gaining skills like this is a major contribution to reduced re-offending.
