Read about the work of optometrists with homeless people

Not all homeless people are living on the streets, but whether in temporary housing, hostels, or on the streets, homeless people find it harder to get access to healthcare.

Walking into an optical practice can be daunting when you are short of funds, and there is so much else to worry about, just to get through the week, so that eye care can take a back seat. Until recently, people with no fixed address were unable to get a free sight test, even if they were eligible for financial reasons, but in July 2023 the Government announced that it was no longer necessary to provide a permanent address.

The charity Vision Care for Homeless People, which campaigned for that changed, provides clinics, both permanent and temporary “pop-up” clinics around the UK. Optometrists and dispensing opticians give their time for free, and several big companies donate eyewear and lenses, or loan equipment for the clinics. VCHP also has a long-standing partnership with Crisis and Christmas, making sure that guests are offered sight tests alongside the other services Crisis supplies.
