Latest edition of Optometry Today ’s guide for locum optometrists

Optometry Today  releases a new instalment of its popular series for locum optometrists, in partnership with the Vision team at Johnson & Johnson

Optometry Today (OT) is releasing a fourth edition of the locum optometrist guide, a resource designed to educate and inform locum optometrists.

Produced in collaboration with the Association of Optometrists (AOP), and in partnership with the Vision team at Johnson & Johnson, the Wellbeing at Work guide addresses the key issue of wellbeing with a focus on supporting locum optometrists in nurturing their mental and physical health in their working lives.

Wendy Steele, AOP Commercial Director, said: “It is only through the continued support from the Vision team at Johnson & Johnson that we can offer the variety of tools and resources to our valued locum members. We appreciate their support with the Locum Logbook, helping members keep accurate records while working across multiple practice locations. Their partnership with the AOP on a range of education initiatives, including the online Locum Day and the Locum Clinical Skills Conference, also ensures tailored clinical and regulatory content that recognises locums’ specific working patterns and environments. We are proud to continue to offer locum specific content delivered via OT, online and in print, including a quarterly locum e-newsletter and a series of standalone locum focused guides.”

The new guide covers practical steps to help practitioners look after themselves in order to provide the best care for their patients, including advice on cultivating healthy habits to navigate the pressures of locum work, daily changes to boost health and happiness, and a focus on the AOP’s Peer Support Line.

Clinical experts also highlighted ways practices can provide safe and healthy workplaces for locums and methods for staying physically healthy at work.

Rachel Hiscox, Professional Education and Development Lead at the Vision team at Johnson & Johnson, said: “Locums play a crucial role in the provision of eye care services to patients across the UK and have unique educational needs. Johnson & Johnson are committed to supporting eye care professionals to be able to provide their patients with excellent eye care. We are delighted to continue our partnership with the AOP to provide tailored support to locums.”

The guide will be issued in the June/July edition of OT, alongside featured content in OT’s online content hub.

The AOP offers a range of support services to locum members, including locum events and webinars, the AOP Locum logbook and the AOP Locum Register. Locums are also able to access the AOP’s general legal helpline and tax investigation cover.
