Optometrist at practice

What we’re calling for

  1. Optimise optometry by using the skills and training of optometrists for diagnosing, treating and managing eye complaints
  2. An update to the medical exemptions list which has not been changed for 20 years, to reflect the training and education of optometrists, and enable optometrists to treat patients with simple anti-allergy medicines
  3. NHS England endorsement of the minor and urgent eye care pathway created by the optometry sector
  4. Investment in primary care services in the community to improve access to care for patients.

Why we need action now?

  1. Patients suffering with an eye related health condition should be able to access an optometrist as their local eye expert and first port of call – reducing the pressure on GP services and hospital eye departments
  2. Minor and more complex eye complaints should be treated by an eye health specialist
  3. Improved patient experiences and outcomes should be a priority, providing greater access to health care in the community that is faster, and closer to home.
