AOP launches survey into the Welsh Government’s contract reforms to primary ophthalmic services

Research will explore the impact of reforms including improving access, reducing pressure on hospitals, and rewarding clinical work appropriately

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) is launching a research survey to assess the outcome of the major reforms of primary eye care services in Wales which came into force on 20 October 2023.

The new ophthalmic services regulations provide opportunities to deliver an expanded range of General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) in Wales.

Peter Hampson, AOP Clinical and Policy Director, said: “Nearly a year on from the new regulations coming into force, it is important that we now gather insights from members on their experiences with the new regulations and the impact in practice on members and patients in Wales.

“Many of the reforms sought to alleviate pressures on other areas of healthcare and cut the waiting list backlog, with welcome changes such as more fully utilising the clinical skills of optometrists and dispensing opticians and rewarding clinical work appropriately. However, there were questions raised on the impact of the regulations on the most vulnerable patients.

“Issues around the delivery of domiciliary and low vision services and the reduction of voucher values were identified as potential areas of concern. This research will be instrumental in informing our calls on the Welsh Government to ensure that there is an appropriate and effective eye care service for all citizens in Wales.”

Members practising in Wales, and those practising on the border in England, will receive a unique link to take part in the survey via email on 23 August.
