Cardiff University has been approved to offer the College of Optometrists’ Higher Professional Certificate in Low Vision.

It is the first institution to provide the professional qualification, which is designed to improve practitioners’ knowledge and skills to a level that allows them to provide an enhanced standard of low vision care.

Practitioners are now able to enrol on the course, which will begin on 21 September. The course will be delivered through supported learning which enables practitioners to watch lectures and listen to podcasts when it suits them. It also includes two days of practical training and two webinars that provide opportunities to practice new skills and discuss cases with colleagues.

Director of education at the College of Optometrists, Jackie Martin, said: “Through our growing range of higher qualifications, we are giving optometrists the chance to develop the specialist skills and knowledge they need to shape their careers and offer high quality, enhanced services to their patients.

Ms Martin added: “Going forward, we’re also working to open up similar opportunities for practices, clinics and training providers, to enable them to respond to developments within the sector.”
