A merger between Julian Davies Opticians and Bateman Opticians has seen 19 jobs saved and four practices prevented from closing.

Julian Davies Opticians agreed a pre-pack administration deal for Bateman Opticians, which had been placed into administration and was facing closure.

Through the agreement, four Bateman practices in Cardiff, Newport and Blackwood will remain open, with staff remaining in their roles.

Chris Tannorella, director of Julian Davies Opticians, commented: “We are delighted to have secured the future of these practices and the jobs of the hard-working staff who are much-loved and appreciated by their patients.”

“We know how important it is to have a real community focus in our business,” he said, adding: “We look forward to continue being there to look after the eye health of people across Cardiff, Newport and Blackwood.”

Bringing the 19 new members of staff into Julian Davies Opticians takes the group to 45 staff across nine practices.

Julian Davies Opticians was founded in 1992 by contact lens specialist Julian Davies with the opening of a practice in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport. The group has grown to further locations in Usk, St Mellons, Llandaff and Whitchurch, with services including enhanced shared care glaucoma services in Cardiff and Newport, and independent prescribing.
