Eye problems to expect as you get older, and information about the main eye diseases

A man having an eye test

We recommend that people have a sight test at least every two years. Even if you have great eyesight, it’s an opportunity to check for eye diseases and other conditions that you may not know you have.

Many people who have had perfect eyesight throughout their lives might find that their sight worsens in their 40s or 50s, which may be due to presbyopia. Presbyopia is the gradual loss of ability to focus on nearby objects, and is a normal part of aging. This is often the reason that people need glasses in later years who never needed them before.

We have advice on many other common conditions that might affect you.
